- In August, 1862, Spencer Cary Doty raised a company of volunteers for the war, was commissioned Second Lieutenant, September 4, 1862, and promoted to First Lieutenant on December 29, 1862. They were ordered to Baltimore and remained between Baltimore and Frederick till after the battle of Antietam. The company was then ordered to New Orleans and formed part of General Bank's expedition. He was deputy provost marshall, and for a time in charge of the Parishes of Placquemine and St. Bernard, LA. He was at the siege of Port Hudson; but, in 1864, resigned on account of sickness, holding the rank of Captain. He returned to New York City, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced to practice in 1869. He had a large and lucrative practice, New York, and lived in Yonkers. He was a member of the Loyal Legion and of the New York State and American Bar Associations. (Doty)
