How Am I Related?

People often wonder, “How am I related to that other person”? The following Table of Consanguinity explains most relationships.

Another way to figure it out – without referring to this Table – is as follows.

  • Siblings share a Parent.
  • 1st Cousins share a Grandparent.
  • 2nd Cousins share a Great-Grandparent.
  • 3rd Cousins share a Great-Great-Grandparent.
  • And so on.

But, how are you related to your 1st Cousin’s child, for example? That child is your 1st Cousin Once Removed – because you are one generation apart. This child and your child would be 2nd Cousins.
