- She survived him, and lived at Lowville, NY with their children. Dr. Hough was a celebrated historian, biographer and statistician. He entered the academy at Lowville, NY, at fourteen years of age, and September, 1840, entered Union College, from which he graduated in 1843. After teaching for several years in New York State and Ohio, he published, in 1846, his first work, a catalogue of the plants of Lewis Co., NY, and then entered the Medical College at Cleveland, Ohio, from which he graduated, MD, in 1848, and began the practice of his profession at Somerville, St. Lawrence Co., NY. After four years experience in his medical practice, he became interested in the subject of local history, and deciding to adopt literature as his profession, he removed, in 1852, to Lowville, Lewis Co., NY, and began his "History of St. Lawrence and Franklin Counties, NY", which he published in 1853. From this time on his life was almost wholly occupied in literary, historical and statistical work. His list of published works includes thirty-three on history, twelve on scientific subjects, seven relating to constitution and laws, and nine on statistics, besides a number of biographies. He was the superintendent of the census of the State of New York, 1855 and 1865, and made the preparations for the census of 1875. He originated, in 1861, the "New York Civil List", and in 1872 published "The Gazatteer of New York". He prepared an "Abstract of the Laws of New York, 1777-1885", a work of great research and labor, which is yet in manuscript (1897), but being of immense value will probably eventually be published by the State. During the War of the Rebellion he served as surgeon of the 97th Regt., New York Vols., for nine months, and four months more as an inspector of the United States Sanitary Commission. A fine sketch of his life by his friend, Henry R. Stiles, AM, MD, with a portrain was published in the "New York Genealogical and Biographical Record" for April, 1886. A sketch of his life also appears in the Report of the Regents of the State of New York, 1886. (Hough)
