  • Notes
    • Tradition reports her to have been of Irish descent. They lived at Salem, NY. Hardwick Records: "Theodorus Dotte of Hardwich, and Jane Densmore of Wear River, were published February 18, 1759". Washington Co., NY, Records at Argyle, NY. May 10, 1780. Captain Theodorus Doty of New Perth, County of Charlotte, State of New York, deeds to Samuel Stewart for 1,6000 pounds, one half of a certain piece of land at New Perth (Salem). 1782. He was on a bond at Salem. 1783, May 1. He was a petitioner for land in Wyoming Co., NY -- Legislative MSS, 1747, State Library, Albany, NY. From certain marks against his name on a subscription list, 1782, at Salem, it would appear that he left shortly after that and may have gone to Wyoming Co., NY. A letter by James D. Doty states that his grandfather was massacred by Indians at Wyoming and that all dead by 1856, meaning the children of Theodorus. His rank of captain may have been earned in the Revolution, but there is a tradition in the family that he was a sea captain. To the will of James Alexander of New Perth, July 16, 1783, appears the name of Zurishaddai Doty as a witness. He was a brother of Theodorus. Almost every son of this family (Theodorus & Jane's sons) achieved distinction in public life. b. prob. Salem, NY - (Doty)
