  • Notes
    • Dorothy Doty Denver writes that Howard was totally crippled by paralysis a few days after his brith from spinal meningitis. "He had a marvelous sense of humor, and a sharp, brillian mind. His body, bones, etc. grew, so he became a big man, but his muscles were so gnarled he was never ble to walk or care for himself. He loved to play checkers and could beat even the best players. He was brilliant in figuring out the plays! Winning delighted him no end! He learned to have partial use of his gnarled hands, but was in a walker all his life. Aunt Alice taught him to read, and he read everything he could lay hands on from law to gardening. He never seemed to be discouraged, but rather was an inspiration to all who visited him. A delightful person!" Irene Doty wrote of him, "Totally crippled by paralysis a few days after his birth from illness with spinal meningitis. Marvelous sense of humor, very sharp, excellent mind--loved to play checker and could beat even the best players. Had partial use of his gnarled hands but was in a walker all his life. Aunt Alice taught him to read nd he red all he cold lay hands on regardless of subject from law to gare\dening! He was a delightful cousin and a privilege to know and visit, even though he could only make a few words understandable."
